What is the BEST exercise for fitness and health?

In recent times Science has proved what women have known since their cave dwelling days: that physical activity is essential for health.

Physical activity was a necessity of survival for our ancestral sisters. In their quest for food and safety, they got the perfect diet of exercise.

But in the last 100 years we have lost our way. In our quest for comfort, convenience and possessions we have completely lost touch with nature in every sense. And, as a society our fitness and health are in crisis.

Science now proves the best type of exercise to create and maintain a fit healthy body is natural physical activity derived from the hunter/gatherer lifestyle.

A routine of 45 to 90 minutes of cumulative daily Physical Activity appears to be necessary for most adults to attain and sustain their body weight in the ideal range.

Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, said, “"Walking is man's best medicine." And now we have thousands of research studies confirming that walking is great for health; and walking with intensity is great for fitness.

So how does the modern day woman, constrained by the sedentary lifestyle we’ve created, reproduce this hunter/gatherer health and fitness experience?

The simple answer is commitment to functional movement (Trek Training) and cross training.

Science also shows the combination of aerobic and strength training is best for improving health.
Interval training, which involves intermittent short bouts of intense exercise with intervening rest and recovery periods, produces better weight loss, superior glucose control, and greater fitness gains than equivalent or longer amounts of continuous lower intensity activity.

Exercise outside in natural settings like grass, trees, bush and water provides added benefits for health and well-being.

Outdoor exercise is great for Vitamin D (Australia has a high level of Vitamin D deficiency); reduces emotional stress; increases long-term adherence; enhances memory performance and attention span; and improves mood better than indoor exercise.

Researchers today have reported that the same pattern of alternating a strenuous workout one day with a less demanding one the next day produces superior fitness with lower risk of injury.

Essential features of a hunter-gatherer fitness regimen
Natural selection shaped the human genome not to run marathons or exclusively lift extremely heavy weights but rather to survive and thrive as very active outdoor generalists in the wild.

Accordingly, the cross-training is ideal for developing and maintaining fitness and general health while reducing risks of injury. Cross training involves a mixture of walking on a variety of surfaces, swimming, bike riding, climbing, stretching, resistance training and core strengthening activities interspersed throughout the week.
