Alyssa Azar is an extraordinary wild woman and an Australian mountaineer with big, big dreams. She has been adventurous since she was a child. Alyssa walked the iconic Kokoda Track at the age of 8, when most kids are still learning their times tables.
At 19, she became the youngest Australian to summit Mount Everest. An incredible achievement.
Alyssa's got her sights set on some Big Hairy Audacious Goals. Her next goal is to climb Mount Makalu, the fifth highest mountain in the world.
In an interview with Wild Women On Top, Alyssa shares her daily healthy habits and reveals how she stays motivated when she doesn’t feel like jumping out of bed.
What are the healthy habits you practice every day?
I have a few and I try to stay as consistent with them as possible. As often as I can, I get outside - even if it’s briefly, even if that’s a run in the morning. I try and do that every day. I find that really helps me mentally and physically. Every day I do a workout of some sort and then I try and get out at least once a week for a longer pack walk out on the trails.
I’ve also gotten into journaling. Even if I can sit down for 5 - 10 minutes and write how I’m feeling and what’s going on, I find that helps me gain clarity. It helps keep me focused, as well. That’s a big one for me.
What does an average day look like for you?
I try and get my morning right. If I get my morning right, I find the rest of the day flows from there. I wake up and do some sort of workout, then I’ll grab a coffee and journal.
I find if I can own the morning and do those things for myself it goes a long way over the long run.
Do you have any non-negotiables in your day?
I try to set myself up with the right nutrition. It’s not super complex, I’m not on a plan or anything, but I try to get proteins and vegetables in most of my meals.
Other than that, it’s the simple things. Keeping up my water intake, trying to get enough sleep, limiting my time on social media and technology.
My non-negotiable is my morning routine, so my workout, coffee, journaling and planning out my day.
How do you motivate yourself to workout on days you’re not feeling up to it?
It comes down to discipline and building habits. I’m definitely not always motivated and there are times when I have to push myself out of bed.
For me, it helps when I have some goal to connect to. It doesn’t have to be huge. If you understand why you want to do it, if there’s a particular climb you want to do, being aware of that reason is a particular motivator for me.
I also remind myself that I’ll feel a lot better once I get into it and I’ve done my morning run. If I didn’t feel like it at the start, it doesn’t take long before you get into it. You’ll be glad you did.
Is there anything you’re training towards that’s keeping you motivated?
The peak I’ve got my sights set on next is Makalu. It’s a mountain in the Himalaya and it’s the fifth highest mountain in the world.
How do you make sure you get enough sleep?
When you are very active, you need time for recovery. Sleep was something I used to struggle with.
There are a few little things I do. Sometimes I’ll listen to a meditation app before I go to bed to help me unwind.
For me, it’s turning off a lot of technology a couple of hours before I intend to go to bed. I try to be more intentional with winding down at the end of the day.
Do you have any tips for someone looking to build healthy habits?
Do what fits for you. At the end of the day, you have to find what works for your rhythm.
The little habits you build do stack up. Even if it’s focusing on one small thing you can do today to put yourself in a better position to be healthier, that will add up in time.
