Forget ageing gracefully... Lets have wildly healthy ageing

A couple of weeks ago, the inspiringly wild Marg Sheridan, celebrated her 75th birthday with a surprise cliff top cake during her 3 hour night trek on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.   

Marg, with two hip replacements and the body of a goddess, is the epitome of women who know how to age healthily. Next year she’s off the trek to Everest Base Camp in Tibet .. the remote trail via the stunning snowy Kangshung Face … with Wild Women On Top.

Sorry Mum … but forget ageing gracefully … when I grow up I want to be just like Marg … I want wildly healthy ageing!

Two and a half thousand years ago, Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, said “Prevention is better than Cure.” And yesterday, the editor of Prevention Magazine Australia, Jacqui Mooney, said, “Prevention is the future of health.”

Wow! How amazing is it to be surrounded by healthy women who live and breathe this every day. What a privilege it is for me to walk in nature with women who share this vision with the world.

Next week is National Prevention Week, which is a celebration of healthy ageing and preventative health. Women over 40 are rediscovering what our ancestors always knew: prevention is better than cure.

By feeding it well, moving it lots and connecting with each other and nature, the body remains healthy. By focusing on prevention, your health will take care of itself.

Modern science is now explaining and uncovering from a cellular level what we have always known: our body has the power to heal itself.

However, to remain healthy in today’s confusing world of mass produced, genetically modified, chemically treated food, which is often little more than poison, is quite a challenge. Do you get confused when you go to the supermarket and try to squint your way through food labels to work out which product is healthy and which will poison you and your kids? I sure do.

I’ve learned to stick with whole fresh foods, resist things that come out of a packet or tin and avoid low fat, chemically sweetened foods. 

So, while modern medicine would mostly have us reach for the bottle of pills, there is a growing army of health professionals and health journalists who are sharing their passion for prevention, and teaching us how to stay healthy. Check out National Prevention Week and for more on this.

Look around you. Women over 40 are taking control of their health, focusing on daily exercise and healthy food, and re-learning to listen to their bodies. Give it a try. Remember, feed it well, move it lots and connect with women in nature.
